Spelling

Update: March 3, 2017
Students will no longer be practicing words from a spelling list. Instead, there will be daily spelling activities to complete in their weekly homework packets that focus on a spelling concept.

Spelling Homework!
The second grade teachers hope that spelling homework can be fun and interesting for your child.  We offer a few suggestions on the Spelling Activity sheet in their yellow take-home folder.  However, here are a few other creative ideas.  Remember that Spelling City can also count.

Letter Hunt

Look through magazines and newspapers and   hunt for the letters that make each of your spelling words.  Cut them out and glue them together to make your spelling words.

Write Telling Sentences
Write good telling sentence using your spelling words.  Each sentence should contain at least one spelling word.

Word ScramblesParent/guardian writes each spelling word with the letters all mixed up.  Then the child writes the word correctly using all the letters.
Example:  Spelling word: about.   The parent might write:  botua
The child unscrambles the letters and writes the word about.

Look/Say/Spell/Cover/Write/CheckLook at your word.  Say your word.  Spell your word.  Cover your word.  Try to write your word from memory.  Check to see if you spelled it correctly.  Do this 2 times for each of your spelling words.

HangmanPlay “Hangman” with a parent/guardian using your spelling words.
